Evidence for a lost population of close-in exoplanets
نویسندگان
چکیده
We investigate the evaporation history of known transiting exoplanets in order to consider the origin of observed correlations between mass, surface gravity and orbital period. We show that the survival of the known planets at their current separations is consistent with a simple model of evaporation, but that many of the same planets would not have survived closer to their host stars. These putative closer-in systems represent a lost population that could account for the observed correlations. We conclude that the relation underlying the correlations noted by Mazeh et al. (2005) and Southworth et al. (2007) is most likely a linear cut-off in the M/R vs a−2 plane, and we show that the distribution of exoplanets in this plane is in close agreement with the evaporation model.

Hot super-Earths stripped by their host stars.
Simulations predict that hot super-Earth sized exoplanets can have their envelopes stripped by photoevaporation, which would present itself as a lack of these exoplanets. However, this absence in the exoplanet population has escaped a firm detection. Here we demonstrate, using asteroseismology on a sample of exoplanets and exoplanet candidates observed during the Kepler mission that, while ther...
متن کاملLost in Translation: Piloting a Novel Framework to Assess the Challenges in Translating Scientific Uncertainty From Empirical Findings to WHO Policy Statements
Background Calls for evidence-informed public health policy, with implicit promises of greater program effectiveness, have intensified recently. The methods to produce such policies are not self-evident, requiring a conciliation of values and norms between policy-makers and evidence producers. In particular, the translation of uncertainty from empirical research findings, particularly issues of...
متن کاملProductivity costs and years of potential life lost associated with five leading causes of death: Evidence from Iran (2006-2010)
Background: Economic burden due to premature mortalities is significant both on health system and on the society as a whole. This study aimed to determine the productivity costs and years of potential life lost associated with five leading causes of death in Iran from 2006 to 2010. Methods: Data on mortality by sex and age-groups due to five main leading causes of death (m...
متن کاملThe burden of tuberculosis in Iran, A 12- year population-based study
Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health problem, so for better planning in the health sector, it is necessary to know the real burden of tuberculosis in our country. The main aim of this study was to calculate the burden of TB for the Iranian population in 2001-2012. Methods: The Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) index was calculated using a computer model (DisMod versio...
